We are full steam ahead on prepping ground and planting fall crops here at Bradford Farm. It won’t be long before all of those favorite autumn crops are available in full abundance. But while fall crops are beginning to trickle onto our availability, don’t give up on our some of the best, freshest, and flavorful late summer crops! A lot of end of summer crops take on a sweetness and depth to them as the nights are cooler, plants are less stressed, and daylength gets shorter. So ramp up the end of summer with us along with our earliest of fall availability!

⚠️ **Highlights of the week**⚠️
Bradford Family Okra
We work very hard at Bradford Farm to provide as long a season as possible of all our crops to chefs. We plant staggered crops of our Bradford heirloom okra to extend the season longer than usual. And we never stop experimenting with ways to improve our growing systems to bring you the very best for the very longest. We have a new late season okra crop kicking in to see if we can extend our availability through October. So don’t write off our okra just yet!
Like our collards and watermelon, this variety has been passed down in our family since the mid 1800s. It has been selected and maintained to be a large tender-pod okra. Unlike modern varieties which are tough and fibrous unless harvested small, ours is crisp and tender up to 7 and 8 inches long. Because they are allowed to mature longer on the okra bush, they take on a greater depth of flavor and are much sweeter. The seeds are also able to produce a higher oil content which enriches the taste even more.
Heirloom Tomatoes
At Bradford Farm, we take pride in stretching heirloom tomato season for our chefs as long as possible. We begin sourcing in Florida early in the year, then follow the season north into the Blue Ridge Mountains, where grower Dale Acre helps carry the harvest well into October and even November! This careful sourcing means that our kitchens enjoy an extended heirloom window when other suppliers have gaps.
Every flat we send out is hand-selected by our tomato expert, Tammy Walker, who inspects each piece of fruit to ensure chefs receive tomatoes at peak quality. Whenever possible, we offer mixed variety flats—commonly featuring Cherokee Purple, Mr. Stripey, Pink Brandywine, and classic Brandywine. The diversity of colors, flavors, and textures makes for striking plate presentation and layered tomato flavor.
Perhaps the most important detail, however, is how we handle ripeness. Each flat is built with intention: one-third of the tomatoes are ready to use on delivery day, one-third will ripen perfectly mid-week, and the final third will peak by week’s end. This gives chefs flexibility in prep, reduces waste, and ensures a steady flow of heirloom flavor all week long.
