The Fall pea as it is known around here, is also the Iron and Clay field pea. It doesn’t start blooming and making peas until the days are shorter in the fall.
This is a very old heirloom field pea variety that is rich in flavor, makes a dark broth, and is packed with nutrients. It’s a rugged pea with the ability to thrive in poor soils and even drought conditions which gives it depth and minerality to its flavor.
There is hardly a field pea more representative of the southern foodway than the Fall pea.
