Spinach - Boomsdale-10lb DELIVERED ON NEXT WEEKS ORDER

Bloomsdale is one of the oldest spinach varieties still widely grown today. First stabilized in the early 1800s by American seedsman David Landreth of the historic D. Landreth Seed Company, the variety became known for its deeply savoyed (crinkled) leaves, strong spinach flavor, and ability to stand up to both raw and cooked preparations. It’s a spinach that carries real structure — not delicate baby leaves, but mature greens with body and character.

At Rooting Down Farms on Edisto Island, Bloomsdale spinach grows in sandy coastal soil enriched with organic matter from years of careful farming. That combination of mineral-rich ground, steady ocean air, and mild winter light produces leaves that are thick, dark green, and intensely flavored without becoming tough. The crinkled surface area of Bloomsdale is part of what makes it special — it holds vinaigrettes, sauces, and seasoning better than flat-leaf types.

Flavor & Texture

Bloomsdale spinach carries the flavor people used to associate with spinach before modern breeding softened it: deep, green, slightly nutty, and clean. The leaves are tender enough to eat raw but substantial enough to cook without disappearing in the pan.

Kitchen Notes

Raw

  • Torn into salads where the savoyed leaves catch vinaigrette well
  • Paired with citrus, apples, or roasted squash
  • Excellent in composed winter salads

Cooked

  • Quick sauté with garlic and olive oil
  • Folded into pasta, risotto, or grains
  • Braised gently with shallot and butter
  • Ideal for creamed spinach because the leaves retain structure

Bloomsdale spinach is a chef’s spinach — substantial, flavorful, and versatile. Grown carefully on Edisto Island, it delivers the kind of texture and depth that modern baby-spinach blends simply don’t offer.
